Terpenes are the aromatic compounds behind many of the scents we instantly recognise in plants: the bright citrus note released when you peel an orange, the resinous smell of pine needles, or the floral character of lavender. They occur throughout the plant kingdom and are particularly important in essential oils, fragrance, food and botanical products.
They are also frequently discussed alongside CBD and cannabis. That association can make terpenes sound far more mysterious — and far more medically proven — than they really are. This guide explains what terpenes are, where they come from, how they shape aroma, how they relate to essential oils and CBD, and what current evidence does and does not allow us to conclude.

What Are Terpenes?
Terpenes are a very large family of naturally occurring organic compounds. Chemically, they are built from five-carbon isoprene-derived units, which can be combined and modified into an enormous variety of structures 1.
Many plant terpenes and related volatile compounds evaporate readily into the air, which is one reason we are able to smell them. These volatile compounds do much more for plants than simply create scent: research describes roles in plant communication, pollinator attraction, defence and responses to environmental conditions 2.
Terpenes are not exclusive to cannabis. They occur in herbs, flowers, fruits, trees and spices — including lavender, citrus peel, rosemary, eucalyptus, black pepper, hops and pine.

These terms are often grouped together, but they are not interchangeable.
Terpenes and Terpenoids
Strictly speaking, terpenes are hydrocarbons constructed from isoprene-derived building blocks. Terpenoids are closely related compounds that have been chemically modified, commonly through oxidation or the addition of oxygen-containing functional groups. In everyday fragrance, essential-oil and cannabis discussions, however, the word terpenes is often used more loosely for the wider family of terpene-derived aroma compounds 3.
Terpenes and Essential Oils
An essential oil is not one terpene. It is a complex mixture of volatile compounds extracted or distilled from a plant. Terpenes and terpenoids can make up an important part of that mixture, alongside other classes of aromatic compounds. The balance between those compounds helps give each essential oil its characteristic aroma 4.
Terpenes and Cannabinoids
Terpenes are also different from cannabinoids such as CBD and THC. Cannabinoids and terpenes can occur within the same cannabis plant, but they are separate chemical families. CBD is a cannabinoid; limonene, myrcene and pinene are terpene-family compounds.
Common Terpenes and Aroma Compounds
There are hundreds of terpene-related compounds in nature. These are some of the names you are most likely to encounter in essential oils, botanical products and discussions about hemp.

These descriptions are useful for understanding scent. They should not be treated as a list of guaranteed physiological effects.
What Do Terpenes Do in Plants?
For us, aroma is the most obvious feature. For the plant, volatile compounds can serve several purposes. Reviews of plant volatile organic compounds describe roles in pollinator attraction, defence, signalling and adaptation to environmental stress 5.
The chemical profile of a plant can also vary with species, variety, growing conditions, maturity, harvesting and storage. That helps explain why two botanicals from the same broad family can still have noticeably different aromas.
What Are Terpenes in Aromatherapy?
Terpenes matter to aromatherapy primarily because they are part of the chemistry that creates the aroma of many essential oils. Citrus oils are commonly associated with limonene-rich profiles; lavender with compounds including linalool and linalyl acetate; eucalyptus with 1,8-cineole; and rosemary with profiles that can contain 1,8-cineole, camphor and alpha-pinene.
Those differences help create the floral, citrus, herbal, woody, resinous and fresh scent families found across aromatherapy products, including candles, roll-ons and other home or body formats.
The chemistry is useful for understanding why something smells the way it does. It is much less useful as a shortcut for predicting a medical outcome.

Do Terpenes Have Health Benefits?
There is active scientific research into individual terpenes and essential-oil components. Researchers have investigated biological activity and possible pharmaceutical uses across laboratory, animal and human research, and terpenes are also being studied as components of advanced drug-delivery systems 6.
That does not mean it is accurate to say, for example, that smelling limonene reduces inflammation, that linalool treats anxiety, or that a terpene in a candle relieves pain. The strength of evidence depends on the compound, concentration, route of administration, study population and whether the finished consumer product itself has been studied.
UK advertising guidance reflects that distinction. CAP guidance says objective health claims for aromatherapy require robust evidence, while medicinal claims cannot be made for an ordinary aromatherapy product unless it has the appropriate medicinal status 7.
For that reason, we use terpene information primarily to explain botanical composition, aroma and formulation rather than presenting aroma as proof of treatment for a health condition.
What Are Terpenes in CBD Products?
Terpenes can occur naturally in hemp extracts and may also be retained or added to formulations for aroma or flavour. Whether a CBD product contains a meaningful terpene profile depends on the extract and the finished formulation.
Terpenes are often discussed as part of the entourage effect: the proposal that cannabinoids, terpenes and other cannabis constituents may interact so that a mixture behaves differently from an isolated compound.
It is an interesting and actively researched concept, but it should not be presented as settled fact. A 2024 systematic review found exploratory evidence around individual terpenes but concluded that synergistic or additive enhancement of cannabinoid efficacy by terpenes remains unproven and requires further clinical trials 8. A separate scoping review likewise found that evidence for a stable, predictable entourage effect remains limited 9.
So a terpene-rich CBD product may have a different aroma and chemical profile from an isolate product. That is factual. Saying it is automatically more effective because of its terpenes goes further than the evidence currently supports.
Do Terpenes Make You High?
No. Terpenes are not THC and their presence does not make a product intoxicating. The familiar smell of cannabis comes partly from its volatile chemical profile, but smell is not evidence of THC content or intoxication potential.
How to Choose Aromatherapy Products by Aroma
Terpene information can be useful when you are choosing a product according to scent preference.
- Bright citrus scents: limonene-rich botanical profiles may appeal.
- Soft floral aromas: linalool-rich botanicals such as lavender may feel more familiar.
- Fresh resinous notes: pinene-containing plants can create piney, herbal profiles.
- Spicy or woody aromas: caryophyllene-containing botanicals can contribute peppery or warm notes.
A scent profile is still only one part of a finished product. The complete essential-oil blend, concentration, wax or carrier base, product format and method of use all shape the experience.

Are Terpenes Safe?
The word natural does not mean a compound is automatically harmless at every concentration or in every format. Essential oils are concentrated mixtures, and products intended for skin application should be formulated and used according to their directions rather than assuming an undiluted essential oil is suitable for direct use.
Safety also depends on the particular essential oil or compound, its concentration, route of exposure and the person using it. If you are pregnant, breastfeeding, have a health condition, are using medication or have known fragrance sensitivities, it is sensible to check product-specific guidance and seek professional advice where appropriate.
The Bottom Line on Terpenes
Terpenes are an important part of plant chemistry and a major reason botanicals have distinctive aromas. They occur far beyond cannabis and are central to the scent profiles of many essential oils, herbs, fruits and flowers.
The most useful way to think about them is as part of a plant’s wider chemical profile. They can help explain aroma, flavour and formulation. They are also legitimate subjects of scientific and pharmaceutical research. What they should not become is a shortcut for turning early-stage research into guaranteed health claims about an aromatherapy or CBD product.
Understanding that difference makes terpene information more useful, not less: you can appreciate the chemistry, choose aromas you enjoy and make more informed decisions without confusing botanical scent with proven medical effect.
