An aromatherapy roll-on is one of the simplest ways to carry a pre-diluted essential-oil blend with you. The rollerball applies a small amount directly to the skin, so there is no bottle to tip, no dropper to measure and no need to handle neat essential oil.
The practical questions are usually more important than the marketing language: where should you apply it, how much should you use, what are “pulse points”, and how do you choose between a bedtime, calming or focus-style blend? This guide covers those basics and explains how our aromatherapy roll-ons fit into a simple daily routine.
What Is an Aromatherapy Roll-On?
An aromatherapy roll-on, rollerball or pulse-point oil is a small bottle fitted with a rolling ball applicator. The liquid inside is formulated for topical use and normally combines carrier oils with selected aromatic ingredients. That is different from a bottle of neat essential oil, which is a concentrated raw material rather than a ready-to-use skin product.
Our three rollerballs are 10ml external-use products containing 500mg CBD isolate. They share an oil-based format but use different essential-oil profiles: Lavender and Camphor for Bed, Eucalyptus and Tea Tree for Balance, and Rosemary, Thyme and Lemon for Boost. CBD is part of the formulation, but we do not describe a roll-on as a route for rapid bloodstream delivery or as a treatment for a health condition.
DID YOU KNOW?
Where Do You Apply an Aromatherapy Roll-On?
The wrists are the easiest starting point because they are accessible, easy to keep away from the eyes and convenient when you want to notice the fragrance during the day. Other products may direct users to additional areas of intact skin, but always follow the label on the individual rollerball rather than assuming every blend has identical directions.
The term pulse point refers to places where a pulse can be felt relatively close to the skin, such as the wrist. In aromatherapy marketing these areas are often used because they are convenient and warm, but there is no need to treat them as a special pathway into the bloodstream. A rollerball is primarily a practical way to apply a small amount of a fragranced topical blend.
Pulse Points: What Is Practical, and What Is Actually Proven?
“Pulse point” is a useful application convention, but it should not be turned into an absorption claim. Warm, exposed areas such as the wrists can make a fragrance easier to notice because volatile aromatic compounds evaporate near the nose. That is different from proving that the wrist creates meaningfully greater systemic delivery of a finished rollerball.
For topical essential-oil products, formulation, concentration, skin condition and the finished product’s safety assessment matter more than a generic internet rule about one “best” body point. A 2025 systematic review of essential oils in skin-care applications found a large and varied evidence base across oils and formulations, which is another reason not to generalise one oil or preparation to another.1
Claims boundary: ASA/CAP guidance requires objective aromatherapy health claims to be supported by robust evidence and does not permit medicinal claims for unlicensed products.2
How to Use an Aromatherapy Roll-On Step by Step
- Read the product directions. Check that the rollerball is intended for external skin use and review any warnings or allergens before the first application.
- Patch test where advised. If you are using a new fragranced topical product, follow its patch-test guidance before broader use.
- Apply a small amount to intact skin. Glide the rollerball over the area specified on the label. The aim is a light application, not to saturate the skin.
- Let the product settle. Avoid immediately rubbing the area against eyes, lips or other sensitive skin.
- Reapply only as directed. More product does not automatically create a better experience. Follow the stated directions and stop if irritation develops.
TOP TIP
Why Use a Rollerball Instead of Neat Essential Oil?
The main advantage is that a finished rollerball is already formulated for topical application. Essential oils are concentrated aromatic materials. “Natural” does not mean that undiluted oil is automatically suitable for direct skin use, and different oils have different concentration and sensitivity considerations.
A rollerball is also easier to carry. The 10ml format fits into a bag, desk drawer or bedside routine without the need for a separate carrier oil and measuring equipment.
Choose Your Roll-On: Bed, Balance or Boost
The easiest way to choose is by fragrance profile and the time of day in which you plan to use it.
| Blend | Principal aromatic notes | Routine |
|---|---|---|
| Bed | Lavender and Camphor | Evening or bedside routine |
| Balance | Eucalyptus and Tea Tree | Everyday pause, yoga or mindful routine |
| Boost | Rosemary, Thyme and Lemon | Morning, desk or workday routine |
Bed — Lavender and Camphor
The Bed rollerball is the evening option. Lavender gives the blend a familiar floral-herbal profile while Camphor adds a sharper aromatic note. Use it as a portable part of an evening routine rather than as a treatment for insomnia or a guarantee of sleep.

Balance — Eucalyptus and Tea Tree
Balance takes a fresher direction. Eucalyptus and Tea Tree give it a clean, botanical aroma suited to people who prefer fresh herbal notes over sweeter floral fragrance. The positioning is a mindful or everyday ritual; it should not be described as treating anxiety or stress.

Boost — Rosemary, Thyme and Lemon
Boost combines herbal Rosemary and Thyme with a brighter Lemon note. It is the most natural fit for a morning or workday routine, but the fragrance should not be presented as clinically improving concentration or cognition.

When Should You Use an Aromatherapy Rollerball?
There is no universal “best” time. The format is useful because it can slot into moments you already have: after getting ready in the morning, before sitting down to work, before a yoga or meditation session, or as part of an evening wind-down.
Using a scent repeatedly in the same context can also make the routine feel more deliberate. That does not mean the fragrance has a guaranteed psychological effect; it simply gives the activity a consistent sensory cue.
How Much Should You Apply?
Follow the directions on the product rather than using a universal number of passes. A rollerball is designed for light application. Applying a large quantity will not necessarily improve the fragrance and can increase the chance of skin sensitivity.
If the aroma becomes uncomfortable or the skin becomes irritated, stop using the product. Do not apply to broken or freshly irritated skin, and keep fragranced products away from the eyes and mucous membranes.
Roll-Ons and CBD: What Does 500mg Mean?
Each of our current rollerballs contains 500mg CBD isolate in a 10ml bottle. That is a product specification, not a promise that a particular amount enters the bloodstream. The rollerballs are external-use topical products and we do not make an internal delivery, treatment or guaranteed-effect claim for them.
If you are comparing products, look at the complete specification: bottle size, CBD type and total amount, the carrier-oil base, aromatic ingredients, allergens and directions. A larger milligram number on its own does not tell you how a product will feel or smell.
Storage and Everyday Safety
- Keep the cap securely closed between uses.
- Store in a cool, dry place away from direct sunlight and excessive heat.
- Use on intact skin and follow the individual label.
- Keep away from the eyes, lips and other sensitive areas.
- Keep out of reach of children and do not ingest.
- Stop use if irritation or an unwanted reaction develops.

Roll-On, Candle or Wax Melt?
A rollerball is for topical external use. A candle or wax melt is home fragrance. Even when products share related essential-oil notes, they are not interchangeable: never put candle fragrance or wax-melt materials on the skin, and never use a topical rollerball in a burner.

Follow the directions on the individual product. More is not automatically better, and fragranced topical products should be stopped if irritation or discomfort develops.
Can I put essential oil directly on my pulse points?
Do not assume neat essential oil is suitable for direct skin use. Use a product formulated and labelled for topical application and follow its directions.
Do CBD roll-ons deliver CBD into the bloodstream?
The London Dispensary does not make a bloodstream or systemic-delivery claim for its roll-ons. They are external-use topical products and should be used according to their label.
